Why Indigenous Understanding Belongs at the Centre of Newcomer Integration
Cianán Meiklejohn is a PhD student in the Gender, Feminist & Women’s Studies program at York University, where their research focuses on trans studies and equity-informed scholarship. They bring over 15 years of experience in 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy and community organizing, with a strong commitment to inclusive governance and community accountability.
Cianán earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Gender Studies (First Class Honours) from the University of King’s College in Halifax. During their studies, they served as Co-President of the university’s 2SLGBTQIA+ student organization and as a Board Member of South House Sexual and Gender Resource Centre, contributing to student advocacy, governance, and survivor-centred support services.
After relocating to Toronto, Cianán volunteered for four years with LGBT YouthLine, providing anonymous peer support to 2SLGBTQIA+ youth across Ontario. As Board Secretary at OII, they bring a deep commitment to equity, strong organizational skills, and lived experience within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to support effective, transparent, and values-driven governance.
