Stories of Arrival
Overview
The Stories of Arrival session 1 brought together newcomers and long-time residents to share migration experiences, build relationships, and highlight the needs and strengths within the community. The gathering created a safe, welcoming space that encouraged honest storytelling, deep listening, and new connections.
This session is part of OII’s Cultures of Connection program and the Intercultural Ministry for Newcomers project, designed to strengthen belonging and support pathways for newcomers across the community.
Objectives
The session aimed to:
• Create an atmosphere of trust, belonging, and shared lived experience
• Encourage participants to reflect on their arrival journeys and challenges
• Identify key newcomer needs such as employment, housing, skills development, and social connection
• Share information about OII’s programs and supports
• Strengthen community partnerships that enhance newcomer integration
• Invite participants to register for ongoing support and follow-up services
Session Summary
Attendees participated in guided conversations, storytelling circles, and group activities that explored personal migration journeys and community experiences in Canada.
The session began with an interactive global-journey activity, allowing participants to connect over shared paths and origins. Small-group discussions followed, offering space for individuals to discuss challenges, insights, and hopes related to their settlement experience.
A warm and welcoming environment was maintained throughout, supported by refreshments and community hospitality. The session ended with an open invitation for participants to sign up for continued engagement and individualized support from OII.
Key Outcomes
1. Newcomer Engagement
• 15 newcomers registered with OII for follow-up support and ongoing involvement.
• Participants expressed strong confidence in OII’s role and expressed interest in continued community activities.
2. Identified Newcomer Needs
Participants highlighted several priority areas:
- Access to employment opportunities
- Skills-building and career development pathways
- Navigating Canadian systems and services
- Transit and mobility barriers
- Experiences of isolation
- Housing challenges and access to safe, stable accommodations
3. Community Strengths
Participants emphasized the strengths they bring:
- Strong sense of community
- Education, professional experience, and transferable skills
